Unfortunately due to the terrible weather and floods we have experienced
“up north” recently the trip to Drax GC was postponed.
Faced with the prospect of no golf there was a certain amount of panic last weekend but after ringing around over a dozen golf courses I found a little oasis; South Leeds GC had 13 holes open!
So despite the “you’re mad” comments off we went. And very pleasant it was too. No really!!, even though it was still extremely windy it was mild and the course was remarkably playable.
As it happens South Leeds GC features in the urban golf theme. An old established club, it was redesigned in the 1920s by Alister MacKenzie as the urban sprawl of Leeds spread to its boundaries.
As you expect, therefore, it has some very interesting holes and the welcome you receive there is second to none. This really is a very friendly golf club!
The course has excellent views of the city in the distance and observing The White Rose Shopping Centre from many holes just makes you appreciate being on the golf course and not battling through the hordes of sweaty shoppers.
I’m looking forward to a round shortly at Drax Golf Club which has superb views of the power station. I’ll file a report here with the better efforts of my point and shoot photography. I’m looking forward to it very much.
Meanwhile, take a look at this for a flavour of what to expect;

One of the attractions to me of playing different golf courses is the scenery but it doesn’t always have to be of our green and pleasant land I am often just as impressed with an urban landscape.
During my research I came across some cracking courses with the most amazing urban and industrial outlooks, good golf courses too! One of the best, Seaton Carew at Hartlepool is a championship test of golf that includes Alister MacKenzie as a golf architect. The links have held many national championships including The Brabazon Trophy.
What about this for a view?

How many years have you been playing golf, Mark?” is a question I have often been asked, “Um! over 35 years”, I reply, quickly adding, “but I started young!”
It’s a long time to do anything and not master it and therein lies to me the fascination of golf. There are so many variables involved that, frankly, it’s a wonder anyone can play the game consistently.
So, some while ago I began to ask myself what it was that I particularly enjoyed about the game and the conclusion I came to was that I really enjoyed playing at different courses. I’ve played many good golf courses and a couple of the greats but I do like playing more modest courses just as much. It’s the variety that does it for me, the immediate scenery and the views further afield.
Those views, though, don’t necessarily have to be picturesque, an urban landscape can be appealing too.
I hope to include here in my blog details of courses that appeal to me gathered together as “themes” that might inspire golfers to look further afield and visit them.
