Golf Trip Themes

I have long wanted to combine my golf posting with a beer theme and as last I have found the perfect excuse. As a golfer how could I resist sampling a beer called Old Hooky? And when it turned out to be particularly flavoursome brew a new series of blog posts is to begin.
The idea is that I will identify a nice ale (or cider!) link it in with the brewers themselves and point golfers to a golf course near to the brewery.
To organise a days golf with a brewery trip and a few sherbets included would be a very civilised carry on indeed.

Old Hooky

Old Hooky is just one of the real ales brewed by Hook Norton Brewery, Oxon, they have 47 pubs with a visitor centre and museum that is open to the public.
Hook Norton brew a range of core beers throughout the year and then seasonal ales and commemorative special brews.
Old Hooky is 4.6% ABV, was Gold Medal winner at The International Beer Challenge in 2009 and the brewers themselves describe it as “A beautifully beautifully balanced beer, fruity by nature, with a well-rounded body and the suggestive echo of Crystal Malt.”!!

Located only 4 miles from the brewery is Tadmarton Heath Golf Club and with a clubhouse that looks like this it is surely irresistible. *

The course itself sounds a delight too, The Times Guide to Golf Courses of Britain & Ireland describing it in glowing terms, “Tadmarton is for the traditionalist, for whom finesse is of greater importance than power…….plotting a way through holes…….which gives the connoisseur particular satisfaction.”

In the days of bomb & gouge this sounds an idyllic throwback to golfing days of old.
Donald Steel the renowned golf architect and writer has provided an evocative introduction to the course and if that doesn’t invoke a desire to look up Tadmarton Heath then you have no golfing soul :-)

* I hope Tadmarton Heath GC does not object to my use of the photo of it’s clubhouse but if so I’ll happily remove it from the post.

One of the most enjoyable days golf I have had was a few years ago at Easingwold GC.
The day was planned around an evening meeting at Ripon Races and it turned out to be a glorious days sport because it was on the same day Liverpool beat AC Milan in The Champions League Final. As you will remember Liverpool came from 3-0 down to win on penalties.
The race course had the match live on giant screens and as you can imagine the atmosphere was incredible.
As a golf trip theme this is a fantastic idea and whilst I cannot guarantee a cup final to watch most UK racecourses have evening meetings in the Summer and many of the local golf clubs tie into them with special deals.
A list of racecourses can be found here www.race-courses.co.uk/racecourses.php why not check out a meeting near you and arrange a days golf around the date?

Unfortunately due to the terrible weather and floods we have experienced
“up north” recently the trip to Drax GC was postponed.
Faced with the prospect of no golf there was a certain amount of panic last weekend but after ringing around over a dozen golf courses I found a little oasis; South Leeds GC had 13 holes open!
So despite the “you’re mad” comments off we went. And very pleasant it was too. No really!!, even though it was still extremely windy it was mild and the course was remarkably playable.
As it happens South Leeds GC features in the urban golf theme. An old established club, it was redesigned in the 1920s by Alister MacKenzie as the urban sprawl of Leeds spread to its boundaries.
As you expect, therefore, it has some very interesting holes and the welcome you receive there is second to none. This really is a very friendly golf club!
The course has excellent views of the city in the distance and observing The White Rose Shopping Centre from many holes just makes you appreciate being on the golf course and not battling through the hordes of sweaty shoppers.

I’m looking forward to a round shortly at Drax Golf Club which has superb views of the power station. I’ll file a report here with the better efforts of my point and shoot photography. I’m looking forward to it very much.
Meanwhile, take a look at this for a flavour of what to expect;

One of the attractions to me of playing different golf courses is the scenery but it doesn’t always have to be of our green and pleasant land I am often just as impressed with an urban landscape.
During my research I came across some cracking courses with the most amazing urban and industrial outlooks, good golf courses too! One of the best,
Seaton Carew at Hartlepool is a championship test of golf that includes
Alister MacKenzie as a golf architect. The links have held many national championships including The Brabazon Trophy.

What about this for a view?
